As stated on the inside of the "Hang tag" (swing tag) attached to the left hand of "Colonel Rebel"...
"The kindly old southern gentleman known as Colonel Rebel is synonymous with Ole Miss
He first appeared in the 1942 yearbook and has matured gracefully over the years.
His features have been modified and redefined and he has become a widely accepted emblem
of the University of Mississippi.
